Three items from the week to 2 September. Rural generalism opens for registration as general practice's first subspecialty, a protected title for more than 3000 doctors. And the 1 October start for PBS prescribing by endorsed registered nurses is expected to be shelved.

Rural generalism opens for registration as general practice's first subspecialty Confirmed

More than 3000 doctors are being invited to register as rural generalists, general practice's first subspecialty and a newly protected title. About 2400 hold an ACRRM fellowship and around 800 the RACGP rural generalist qualification, and they register on evidence of the qualification alone; other rural GPs can register but must show the required expertise. Health ministers approved the new field in September 2025 (announced 21 September 2025). For a rural practice, a recognised title shapes how it recruits, bills and is valued.

Advent and doctors complete a $700m radiology merger to form Radia Reported

Advent Partners' Imaging Associates and doctor-owned Radiology SA have raised $360 million and are completing a $700 million merger to form Radia, a top-five radiology group that plans to grow by buying individual clinics and small groups. It will compete with Radiology Partners, which agreed to acquire Everlight Radiology for about $1 billion the week before.

Nurse PBS prescribing rollout expected to be shelved Reported

The 1 October start for PBS prescribing by endorsed registered nurses is expected to be put on hold. Software vendors told the Medical Software Industry Association they had not been given the specifications, validation rules or test data to update prescribing, dispensing and claiming systems safely in time, and that no complete process yet covers endorsement through to real-time prescription monitoring. For practices, nurse prescribing and the system changes it brings now slip to an unset date.

Rollout was due 1 October 2026
